LOS ANGELES — Actor Robert De Niro, known for his frequent vitriolic statements about President Donald Trump, has been cast as an assassin attempting to kill the president in an upcoming documentary to be filmed by himself in the near future, according to a new report in Deadline.
“Donald, you think you’re a gangster? You wanna meet a real gangster? This guy…he’s a buffoon. And someone’s gotta take matters into their own hands,” De Niro explained in a video posted to social media in which he slowly loaded a handgun.
Trump was quick to lambast the new film in a speech he gave on Sunday.
“Bobbbbby De Niro. You know, I don’t like the guy! I don’t like him. I don’t—he doesn’t like me, so how can I like the guy?” Donald Trump said, three hours into the speech. “I’ve a great friend, the late great Travis Bickle. Do you know him? The late great Travis Bickle—I called him up on the phone the other day and he told me, Robert de Niro, terrible actor. He’s worked with him! He said he’s a terrible, terrible actor. Doesn’t know how to act. Doesn’t know… how to do anything. He doesn’t know. I say Robby doesn’t know. Scotty doesn’t know too. Scotty! He simply does not know.”
Despite opposition from his subject, De Niro is working to complete the project in 2025.
“Really excited for this film! Robert is going to be writing, producing, starring, directing, stunts, and even editing, if he survives production,” said producer Chester Rowe. “It’s really cool to see such a storied performer take on a project so outside of his comfort zone, but one that he’s obviously been mulling over for years.”
As of press time, the production team is still casting other roles in the documentary. Thus far, former wrestler Hulk Hogan has been cast as Trump’s ineffectual bodyguard and Donald Trump has been cast as Donald J. Trump.
