LOS ANGELES — Disney producer Grover Best reportedly scrolled through Akira Kurosawa’s IMDb page today, looking for an idea for a new Star Wars film, according to close sources.
“Let’s see… we did The Hidden Fortress, we did Yojimbo, Snyder did Seven Samurai. What’s left? Dreams? Can we just put eight of Akira Kurosawa’s lifelong recurring dreams in space and call that a Star Wars movie?” Best said in a meeting with other producers while projecting the legendary Japanese filmmaker’s credits onto a big TV screen. “Lemme open up Wookieepedia in another tab and see if any random Extended Universe character could be an imperial soldier who hangs out in a tunnel while insisting they aren’t actually dead. Asajj Ventress? Can she do that?”
Other Star Wars producers were enthused by the idea.
“Few people actually know this, but the original Star Wars was actually based on a Kurosawa film, which is why it’s so cool to keep doing that,” said producer Dave Filoni. “Movies is all about referencing things. Whether it’s referencing books about your own movies, scrapped notes from the original director of the series you’re working on, or other films, the important thing to do is just recreate things you’ve seen elsewhere. And trust me I went to the best film school in America: listening to interviews with Quentin Tarantino.”
Despite excitement around the Disney offices, some fans were confused by the announcement that another Kurosawa-influenced movie may be coming soon.
“Ikiru? Is that one of the guys from the TV shows? I stopped watching those,” said Twitter user CoolMissingHandLuke.
“I don’t think it’s smart to make a Star Wars movie based on Rashomon,” said Redditor DarthVadooor893. “Everyone already has completely different memories of how The Last Jedi went.”
At press time, Disney announced seven new Star Wars films to be space-versions of Akira Kurosawa films, and then promptly canceled them after getting nervous.
